Moonlight Natural Pet Store Mural

The Brief

Moonlight Natural Pet Store commissioned us to create a large-scale infographic with anatomical drawings of a dog and cat on a chalkboard within their store. This was designed to assist the store owners when explaining the benefits of their products to their customer’s beloved pets.

Considerations…

  • The blackboard is 102 inches above the ground and therefore an aerial work platform was required

  • Chalkboard measuring: 138” wide x 96” tall

  • Graphics will need to be projected onto the wall to ensure the scale of proportions is kept in line with approved sketches

  • Must be informative but colourful and visually pleasing

  • The lighting must be considered as to how well the light will project onto the blackboard

  • Chalk versus paint markers are to be considered depending on the finishing

The Process

  1. Concept Design

The initial concept design was well laid out by the client with a clear direction of what they wanted to convey, the precedence artwork they liked and the location for the artwork within the store. This made our job very enjoyable to take the work they had already done and build on it.

2. Detailed Design

To ensure accurate scale and proportions in the final artwork, our approach involved projecting the image onto the chalkboard. This allowed us to establish the correct dimensions. As a first step, we embarked on creating a graphical rendition of the artwork using Illustrator. This enabled us to experiment with different layouts, refine fonts, and explore various artistic styles and colours, leading us to the finalized artwork that would be painted onto the chalk wall.

As an added bonus by doing the graphic digitally first, we could also supply this to our client to use on their website and print media.

3. Build/Fabricate

To facilitate access to the chalkboard wall, we utilized an aerial work platform. A projector was then positioned behind the platform to project the graphic image onto the wall. With this setup in place, our artist sketched the initial outlines of the graphics they created using a range of white Posca markers. To further enhance the artwork, vibrant coloured chalk was used to gradually introduce intricate details, resulting in this beautiful graphic the Moonlight team now gets to see every day!
